Twenty-five years ago, my mother Carol opened a little door on King Street in Charleston. She had a sewing table, a few racks, and one belief she repeated to every woman who walked in that you deserve to feel beautiful, comfortable, and truly like yourself.

I grew up in that shop. Years later I stood beside her at the counter, and Carol & Nicole became what it is today: a mother and daughter, dressing the women of Charleston one fitting-room conversation at a time.
